Perfect Fit Hiking Socks Pattern - Free



Perfect Fit Hiking Socks
Men's Size 10-11
Sport or Worsted Weight Wool
approx. 100 grams (or a tad more)
Size 6 or 7 dpn

Using the Turkish Cast On,
Cast On 10 wraps.
Knit 2 rounds.
Begin increases for toe,
*K1, K1f&b, Knit to last 2 sts, K1f&b, K1, repeat for 2nd needle
Knit 1 round* Repeat these 2 rows until you have increased 6 stitches on each end of both needles: 24 increases

Knit 4 rounds in secondary color
Knit 3 rounds in primary color
Knit 4 rounds in secondary color
Knit 28 rounds

Begin increases for gusset,
*Knit top of foot (needle 1),
Knit bottom of foot (needle 2) as follows:
K1, K1f&b, Knit to last 2 sts, K1f&b, K1
Knit 1 round*

Repeat these 2 rows until you have increased 11 stitches on each end of needle 2 and have 22 increases.

Begin heel,
(if you need to use a tutorial for short rows-go here)
Knitting only on needle 2,
Knit to last 11 sts, wrap 11th st, turn work
Purl to last 11 sts, wrap 11th st, turn work
Knit to last 12 sts, wrap 12th st, turn work
Purl to last 12 sts, wrap 12th st, turn work
continue in this manner until 6 sts remain unworked.

Begin heel shaping,
Knit until you come to the last st that was wrapped, pick up wrapped st & knit with the st that was wrapped, keep doing this until all stitches are picked up, turn work (leaving the original unworked 10 sts at end of needle).

Purl until you come to the last st that was wrapped, pick up wrapped st and knit with the st that was wrapped, keep doing this until all stitches are picked up, turn work (leaving the original unworked 10 sts at end of needle).

Begin heel flap,
Slip 1st stitch (every time!) then K1, Sl1 to the 11th st. Slip needle into the back of 11th and 10th stitch and knit together, turn work.
Slip 1st stitch (every time!) Purl row to the 11th st., slip needle into front of 11th and 10th stitch and purl together, turn work.

Continue the K1, Sl1 on knit rows and Purl on purl rows,
working the last stitch & one stitch of the original 10. End on the knit side (even if you have 2 sts left, just K3Tog -knit 3 together, and begin knitting on needle 1 for ankle)

Begin leg,
Once you've begun to knit around, divide stitches and K4, P2 around.
*If you have an odd number, just make the necessary adjustments.

Knit 30 rounds primary color
Knit 18 rounds secondary color
Knit 4 rounds primary color
Knit 3 rounds secondary color
Knit 4 rounds primary color
Knit 6 rounds secondary color.

**or for stripes only:
Knit 48 rounds
Knit 4 rounds secondary color
Knit 3 rounds primary color
Knit 4 rounds secondary color
Knit 6 rounds primary color.

Bind Off LOOSELY,
Tuck ends,
Make 2nd sock,

As for the ribbing on the socks I started... it is purl 3, knit 2 ribbing.

Would you post what gauge you worked these in? It would be REALLY helpful to have that and to also have inches on the drawing so that this could be adapted a bit. For instance, I'm using a worsted weight yarn and a size #8 (US) needle and following your directions, these socks got huge!
